• Before you pray….Reflect on “this present time”
    • “You suffer more because you don’t expect to suffer at all” (De Young)
    • Gen 3:17 / Jn 16:33 / 2 Tim 3:12 / 1 Pt 4:12 / Rom 5:12 / Rom 8:18 / 1 Pt 5:8 / 1 Cor 15:26 / 2 Pt 3:11-13
  • Before you pray…. Deconstruct any Deistic Views of God
    • ‘Deism’ maintains that God created the universe, but does not intervene in His creation (like a wound-up clock). But…
    • Job 39:19-20a / Ex 4:11 / Mt 6:26 / Mt 20:29 / Dn 2:21-22 / 1 Sam 2:6-7 / Hab 1:6 / Rom 9:17 / Jer 51:16 Jer 14:22 / Amos 4:7 / Dn 11:17
    • As we approach God, remember that He has historically used His power to do the very things we are asking to be undone.
  • Before you pray….Acknowledge God’s right to Deny our requests
    • Our wicked nation has no rights before God.
    • But God has absolute right to do as He pleases, because He is the Creator, Judge etc. (see also Eph 1:11 / Mt 26:39)
  • When you pray….Appeal to Grace because of Grace
    • Appeal to grace (COMMON grace)
      • Common Grace is anything that is good in Creation – rain, food, health, human creativity & ingenuity etc. (Js 1:17)
      • So we appeal to God to extend His grace to the wicked once again (Mt 5:45). We appeal for Him to glorify Himself through His kindnesses to an underserving people.
    • Because of grace (SPECIAL grace)
      • Special Grace is that focused grace of God that causes a person to be born again through faith in Jesus Christ.
      • So it fall to us to make appeal to God for our nation:
        1. Because as citizens of Heaven, we are uniquely positioned to make this appeal (1 Tim 2:5 / Jn 14:5)
        2. Because as citizens of Earth (converted), we are supposed to pray for the sake of the elect, and others (c.f. 1 Tim 2:12 / Mt 24:22 / Genesis 18:22-33)
