1. A Warning about False Religion
- In Luke 20:46-7, Jesus mentions six characteristics common to the Scribes (experts in Jewish law & tradition).
- In summary, the Scribes were: obsessed with appearances and titles, jostling for power and influence, secretly working for praise and recognition, ready to take advantage of others for their own agendas, all the while making a show of piety.
- Jesus says “They will receive greater condemnation”
2. An Example of True Piety
- Thirteen “trumpet-shaped” receptacles were placed around the courtyard to receive the offerings of worshippers at Temple.
- A misapplication of the text, concerning giving, would suggest that believers should totally impoverish themselves.
- A lawful application, concerning giving, would be that believers should be generous towards God (1 Tim 6:17-19; 2 Cor 8-9).
- The point in context – the widow’s heartfelt & secret piety was in sharp contrast to the ‘trumpeting’ Scribes or religious hypocrites.
