Reforming our thoughts on Voting in accordance with Scripture
1Corinthians 10:31 “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” When it comes to voting, God’s will and God’s glory is what must control our choice in the ballot booth. As Christians we must never equate any political party with salvation; because true reformation and revival does not come about through politics; but only by the Spirit of the Living God. However, as Christians, who and what we vote for, must be guided by a biblically informed conscience, because our voting is an area that falls within the light of Scripture and should be informed and controlled by it. The teaching from Scripture is clear that godlessness leads to wickedness; and thus we should not assume:
- that spiritual or moral issues are unrelated to bad governance
- that abortion is unrelated to state capture
- that state sanctioned sexual immorality has nothing to do with financial mismanagement at a local municipal level
To help in reforming our thinking on this topic, we recommend listening to this sermon on Isaiah 31 entitled “Look at the Nice Shiny Chariots“. The passage is about trust, choices and alliances; and God’s sovereignty and faithfulness to His Word – so it’s not about voting. However, there are important lessons that rise from the text that are helpful in guiding us in our choices and alliances when it comes to voting.
